Antarctica, the fifth largest continent, is located almost entirely within the Antarctic Circle and has no permanent human residents. It is covered in snow and ice, with a thickness of up to 4.7 kilometers in some places holding about 90% of the world's ice and 70% of the world's freshwater. The continent is mostly famous for its harsh and unforgiving environment, with temperatures as low as -80°C. Despite its extreme climate, it is home to a few hardy species of animals such as penguins, seals, and whales, all of which are specially adapted to the challenging conditions. Antarctica is also known for its scientific research, as many countries have established research stations to study the effects of climate change on this unique and fragile ecosystem.
